Excursions

San Marco d'Alunzio
Parco dei Nebrodi

It's a little village situated on a hilltop, not so far from the seaside.

From there, wonderful panoramas of Capo d'Orlando, Palermo and Eolian Islands.

Parco dei Nebrodi
Sant'Agata di Militello
Lipari

Located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in front of the Eolian Islands, it takes its name from a church dedicated to Sant'Agata and from “meleto”, that means “apples field”. According to the legend, the city was founded by some fishermen from Catania who, safe from a storm, dedicated a new village to their patron saint.

Interesting to see: the XVIII century castle, that belonged to the princes of Trabia and Lanza di Scalea, with its church where it's possible to see a particular bell tower-veiled.

The most important monuments are the Spanish XVI century castle, the cathedral, built during the XV and XVI centuries, where, before, there was the ancient Norman cathedral, and the Eolian Museum. Interesting finds of the Age of bronze and of the greek and roman age were found in the castle. A visit to the famous beaches cannot be renounced.

Capo d'Orlando
Santo Stefano di Camastra

It's one of the biggest cities of the Nebrodi's area and also the most important tourist center. The legend talks about Eolo's son, Agatirso, who, during the war of Troy, shored to that coast, under the hill where now is a church dedicated to the Virgin and a Middle-Age castle. Capo d'Orlando takes its name from the hero Orlando.

Sicilian capital of ceramics (handworked production), thanks to the pug pits in its area. During the month of August, it takes place the Feast of Ceramics and it's possible to see masters working along the ways of the village.

San Fratello
Naso

Famous for the traditional events during the Holy Week, the pagan Feast of "Giudei", one of the most famous in Italy.

The economical activities in San Fratello are agriculture and farming. The most important products of farmers are the horse and the black pig, both of them native of the "Parco dei Nebrodi", and grown up in wildness.

It takes its name from the greek word "Nesos", that means "Island", as it looked like an island, among the hollows all around it. Along many centuries, it was a "Saraceno", Norman and "Aragonese" centre, until it became a baronage and then a county. The old castle and many and other signs of the past centuries were distroyed during different earthquakes. To see: the mother-church dedicated to the apostles Phillip and James, with many Gagini's works and XVII century pictures; Saint Cono's church, which is baroque; the Franciscan Convent; Saint Mary of Jesus' church and Palazzo Giuffré.
Alcara Li Fusi
Acquedolci

This ancient historical centre, in "Parco dei Nebrodi", is situated on a hilltop. To see: the "Grotta del Lauro" and the pagan feast of "Muzzuni", on June 24th.

Only 15 meters on the sea level. Close to the "Grotta di San Teodoro", important finds prove the human presence since the Paleolithic age in that area
